Japanese Bobtail

Interestingly enough, these short-tailed felines are often calico—so perhaps that makes them even luckier! The Japanese Bobtail cat’s tail is a naturally occurring genetic mutation, and no two tails will ever be truly identical. However, no true Japanese Bobtail cat will ever have a shortened tail that exceeds three inches in length. The Japanese Bobtail cat is typically on the smaller side, weighing around 6 lbs for females, and slightly larger for males. These petite lucky cats are known for being more on the vocal side, and also known for their love of water!

In an article detailing facts about the Japanese Bobtail cat breed on Cattitude Daily, we shared that,

“Not all cats have jobs, but the Japanese Bobtail did! Like how the Norwegian Forest Cat killed rodents on Viking ships, the Japanese Bobtail cat breed has been around since the 6th century and was a pro-ratter. The breed is said to be naturally occurring, and there is still perfectly preserved antique artwork in both the Gotokuji Temple and Niko Temple that showcases a love for Japanese Bobtail cats. This ancient breed of cat was responsible for catching rodents in the silkworm barns, and their skills were praised by the Japanese people. And it’s said that the Imperial families of Japan adored these short-tailed cats. A symbol of good luck, the famous Maneki Neko AKA Beckoning Cat is said to be a short-tailed calico cat.”

Korat

This cat hails from Thailand, and it is one of the few cat breeds that is entirely gray in coat color. Not to be confused with the Russian Blue cat, another beloved “gray” cat, the Korat cat breed is considered to be so rare, that it would be a delight even to see one in Thailand. The Korat cat breed is characterized by a sleek gray coat, heart-shaped head, and large green or amber-green eyes. These lucky cats are said to be as affectionate as they are beautiful. The Korat is an ancient breed of cat that has been around for centuries, but they’ve only been in the United States for a few decades. It is believed that the Korat is closely related to the Siamese. However, these sweet lucky kitties aren’t nearly as chatty as their Siamese cat cousins.

In an article detailing facts about the Korat cat breed on Cattitude Daily, we shared that,

“Korat cats weren’t living the stray life in ancient Thailand. These cats were considered true gifts to society. We are not kidding – up until the 20th century, Korat cats were never sold in Thailand. They were only given as gifts! How did this tradition start? Since the 14th century, Thai people considered the Korat cat a sign of luck and prosperity. In fact, the Korat cat was one of the most popular wedding gifts, to wish newlyweds good fortune.”

Siamese

These ballerinas of the cat world are as elegant as they are talkative. Adored by cat lovers worldwide, these color-pointed beauties have long since been known as a lucky cat breed. The Siamese are attention-seeking and known for their desire to be near their humans, and it’s been rumored that this good-luck cat breed will bring prosperity to the humans in their homes. According to ancient legends, it’s been said that these cats of Siam (now Thailand) were kept by ancient peoples to keep away evil spirits. These good luck cats were a favorite among royals and places of worship.

Referred to as “sacred temple cats” in ancient Siam, there are interesting legends surrounding their infamous cross eyes and kinked tails.

“The legend is that a group of Siamese cats in ancient Siam were given the responsibility of guarding a precious royal goblet made completely out of gold. While taking their duties very seriously, the cats became cross-eyed after staring at the goblet so intensely. And for those kinked tails? Legend has it this occurred as a result of them wrapping their tails around the goblet—just as cats wrap their tails around their front paws when resting on their haunches. Because of this intense tail wrap, their tails were thought to have become permanently bent as a result.”
